Created in 1966 by Royal Decree and endowed with legal personality and financial autonomy, the Institute started with 12 students and courses taught by foreign teachers.
As early as October 1969, the Government Authorities expressed the desire to see veterinary training carried out in Morocco and entrusted this mission to the Institute which took the name "Hassan II Agronomic and Veterinary Institute".

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) was originally established as a non-profit Community University in 2005 and issued an operational License by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). MMU was held in Trust by a Board of Trustees on behalf of the community.
Kampala International University (KIU) is a private, not-for-profit institution based in Uganda. It was established in 2001 and assumed chattered status in 2009.

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a faith-based private University, owned by the Episcopal Conference of Catholic Bishops of Uganda. Uganda Christian University replaced the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College which trained clergy and educators during its 100 history. The local chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.
Soroti University, by Statutory Instrument No. 34 of July 2015 became a fully-fledged Public University under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001 as amended.
