Uganda Christian University replaced the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College which trained clergy and educators during its 100 history. The local chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.
Soroti University, by Statutory Instrument No. 34 of July 2015 became a fully-fledged Public University under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001 as amended.

Historically, the quest for a public university in West Nile can be traced back to the 1970s when initial attempts by government to establish a public university in the region were hindered by the country's turbulent past wars. The desire for a government supported university in the West Nile region continued to be expressed in various fora, both within and outside the region.
Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), a pivot of higher education in Uganda, traces its roots back to October 1989. Initially housed within the repurposed Mbarara District Hospital???s School of Midwifery, the university was formally established through the Mbarara University of Science and Technology Statute 1989, enacted by the National Resistance Council.
Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics.
Kyambogo University (KYU) was established with the main aim of promoting and advancing knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education and such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society.
Kampala University was established by corporate professionals in February 1998. It opened its gates to pioneer students in October 1999. The University was first licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports on 23rd November 2000 to operate as an institution of higher learning. In 2003, KU held its 1st Graduation Ceremony with a total of 141 graduates.
Kabale University is located on Plot 364 Block 3 Kikungiri Hill, in Kabale Municipality, about a kilometre off Kabale-Katuna-Kigali Highway. The Main Campus sits on 50 acres of land. The University can be accessed via Mukombe Road, which connects the Kikungiri Campus to the Highway. An additional Campus is located on Plots 66-76 in Nyabikoni Parish in the Central Division of Kabale Municipality.
