When Stellenbosch University was officially established in 1918, agriculture was one of the first four faculties. In 2006 the faculties of agriculture and forestry merged to become the Faculty of AgriSciences. The Faculty has 11 departments: agronomy; conservation ecology and entomology; forest and wood science; genetics; soil science; horticultural sciences; agricultural economics; plant pathology; animal science; food science; and viticulture and oenology.
The University of Zambia (UNZA) was established by Act of Parliament No. 66 of 1965. The first intake of students took place on 17th March 1966. The motto of the University, SERVICE AND EXCELLENCE has guided the development of the University since its inception. UNZA is situated in Lusaka on two campuses. The main campus is the Great East Road Campus and it is situated on the Great East Road, 6km from the town center. The other campus is the Ridgeway Campus catering for the Medical School.

The Copperbelt University is the second largest public university in Zambia, which was established by an Act of Parliament No. 19 of 1987 and its continued existence is provided for under the Higher Education Act No.4 of 2013. The University offers diverse programmes in Business, Built Environment, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Mining, Natural resource management and Peace/conflict studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
In 1995, the Government made a decision to address the problem of the shortage of science teachers locally by setting up a University of Science Education. The Bindura University College of Science Education was established under the University of Zimbabwe. Arrangements were made for it to be housed at the Provincial Public Service Training Centre in Bindura.
The Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) started as a degree program that was established under the auspices of the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in 1999. It was established as part of the recommendation of the Chetsanga Commission to devolve Chinhoyi Technical Teachers College and other similar colleges into degree granting institutions. This process saw the birth of the Chinhoyi Degree programmes offering two degree programmes that is, Production Engineering and Hospitality and Tourism.
Great Zimbabwe University, then known as Masvingo State University, was established through the recommendations of the Chetsanga Report of August 1995 which proposed the devolution of Teachers and Technical Colleges into degree awarding institutions that would eventually become universities in their own right. Lupane State University The university was established through an act of the Zimbabwe parliament in 2004 and opened its doors to 14 pioneer students in the faculty of Agricultural Sciences in August 2005. The expansion of university education in Zimbabwe is part of government policy adopted at the onset of independence.
Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (MUAST) was established through an Act (Chapter 25:29) of Parliament in 2015 and its mandate is Agricultural Sciences and Technology.
