What is GenStat Discovery Edition?

The GenStat Discovery Edition is a free version of GenStat developed by VSN International for use by not-for-profit research organisations, charities and educational institutes based in the developing world. Click here to go to the website of VSN Intl.

The first edition, released in October 2003, was distributed throughout Africa by the Capacity Strengthening in Research Methods project from VVOB (Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance) based at the ICRAF-ILRI Research Methods Group in Nairobi, Kenya. Given the success of the initiative during the first year, VSN Intl. decided to make GenStat Discovery Edition available to users in developing countries all over the world.

The current edition, released in November 2007, is distributed by RUFORUM, the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture. They are based in Kampala, Uganda.

Technically, GenStat Discovery Edition 3 is based on GenStat for Windows 7th Edition.

Who can use it?

GenStat Discovery Edition 3 is available to non-commercial users throughout Africa and a range of developing countries outside Africa. Examples of users who qualify are students and lecturers of universities and staff of government research organisations or NGOs.

When you register for a license you will be asked for information about the status of the organisation which will be using the software to determine whether it qualifies for the free version. Click here to go to the web page with terms and conditions for end users.

Registration

You want of course to install the software immediately, but read first about its registration.

After installing the software, you can use it immediately. But on 30 September 2008, your GenStat Discovery Edition 3 will stop working. To continue using the software, you have to register. Also this registration is free. So, do not get confused with trial versions of software where you have to pay after the trial period ends. The reason why you need to register is that the developers have an idea of how many people are actually using GenStat Discovery Edition. Anyhow, register before 30 September 2008.

If your computer is connected to the Internet, simply click on the Register button on the start up screen. Fill in the form on-line and you will receive a license key by email.

If your computer is NOT connected to the Internet, find a computer that has Internet access, for instance in a cybercafé and go to following site:

http://www.genstat.co.uk/downloads/discovery/

First select your country and check the box to accept the terms and conditions. Click on the Register button and on the next page, fill in the form and click the submit button. Again, you will receive a license key by email. This will be a small file called "genstat.lic". Copy that file on the hard disk of the computer where you installed GDE3, start GDE3, click on the Install License button and follow the instructions.

In both cases you will have your license renewed for another year. Repeat this each time the license expires.
