Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) began in 1964 as an Agricultural College offering Diploma in Agriculture. It was elevated to a Faculty of Agriculture in 1969 under the University of Dar es Salaam. When the Faculty of Agriculture was established it was offering two programmes: one leading to a Diploma in Agriculture, the other one leading to award of BSc Agriculture. The diploma was phased out in 1973. In the same year a new three years programme offering a degree in BSc Forestry was started. In 1976 another degree programme in Veterinary Medicine was started. The Faculty of Agriculture was therefore renamed as Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine still under the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1984, the Faculty was elevated to a fully fledged university and renamed as Sokoine University of Agriculture after the late Edward Sokoine who was the Prime Minister of Tanzania. |
