Makerere University, www.makerere.ac.ug
Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa.  It expanded over the years to become a Centre for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935 and the University College of East Africa in 1949, affiliated to the University of London.  In 1963, the College became the University of East Africa and eventually, the National University of the Republic of Uganda in 1970. Currently, the university has a student population of about 33,000, most of them (90%) private sponsored students.  The main campus is about three kilometres to the north of Kampala city center, offering an excellent academic environment, free from city-related disturbances.
The University’s Vision is “To be a centre of academic excellence, providing world-class teaching, research and service relevant to sustainable development needs of society.”
         
Its Mission is “To provide quality teaching, carry out research and offer professional services to meet the changing needs of society by utilising world-wide and internally generated human resources, information and technology to enhance the university’s leading position in Uganda and beyond.”
Academic Units: 

Makerere University   has several renowned academic units with excellent facilities. Currently, the University has eleven Faculties of:  Agriculture, Arts, Computing and Information Technology, Law, Economics and Management, Forestry and Nature Conservation, Medicine, Science, Social Science, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine.

 
  • There are four Schools of: Education, East African School of Library and Information Science, Industrial and Fine Art, and Graduate Studies and Research
  • Eight Institutes of: Adult and Continuing Education, Agricultural Research Institute Kabanyolo, Environmental and Natural Resource Management, Languages, Psychology, Public Health, Social Research, and Statistics and Applied Economics.
  • Three Centres of: Human Rights and Peace (Faculty of Law), Child Health and Development (Faculty of Medicine) and Continuing Agricultural Education (Faculty of Agriculture)
