Faculty of Forestry & Nature Conservation at Makerere University

Makerere University has been offering training in professional Forestry since 1970, it started as a department in the then Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry but in 1999 it evolved into the Faculty of Forestry and Nature Conservation, comprising of four departments: Forest Management, Forest Biology and Ecosystems management, Community Forestry and Extension, and Forest Products Engineering.

Vision: To be a centre of excellence in providing client–responsive training, research and knowledge in forestry and allied natural resources.

Mission:
To advance knowledge in the use, management and conservation of forests and other allied natural resources through training, research and technology transfer for accelerated national development.

Academic Programs:
At undergraduate level, the following degrees are offered: BSc. (Forestry), Bachelor of Community Forestry, and BSc. (Wood Science and Technology). At the postgraduate level MSc.(Forestry), MSc.(Agroforestry) and PhD degrees are offered.

Staff Establishment:
The Faculty has a total of 34 academic staff of which 8 are females. Out of the existing staff, 14 are PhD holders while 10 are about to complete their PhD programs.  To overcome the staff shortfall, the university annually engages 20 part time lecturers.  The Faculty also relies on teaching staff from the Faculty of Agriculture for many of the 1st year courses.

Student Enrolment:
The total student enrolment in the faculty is an average 300 of which about 100 are female.

Research:
The Faculty Staff, Msc and Ph.D students undertake research in the areas of Agroforestry, community forestry, forest management, forest ecology and forest products with cross border collaborators and national partners.

 
Collaboration with other Institutions:
Various collaborative arrangements exist in areas of training, research, supervision and external examination.   The Faculty works closely with Nyabyeya Forestry College mainly in issues of training students in practical aspects of research and conservation.   In addition a number of staff are members of organizations such as Nature Uganda, Uganda Wildlife Society (UWS), and the Ugandan Network of Ethno botanists (UGANEB).
