At the dawn of independence in 1964, the Government of the newly independent Malawi established the University of Malawi which is composed of five constituent Colleges of Chancellor College in Zomba, the Polytechnic and College of Medicine in Blantyre, Kamuzu College of Nursing and Bunda College of Agriculture in Lilongwe. Bunda College of Agriculture was specially established to provide manpower to the agricultural sector which is the backbone of the economy of Malawi.

Mission Statement

The mission statement of Bunda College of Agriculture is to advance and promote knowledge, skills, and self-reliance for sustainable food production and utilization and to improve income, food security and nutrition of the rural and urban populations and conservation and management of biodiversity, natural resources and the environment through the provision of information services, teaching and training, research, outreach and consultancy in response to national and international needs.
   

Location

Nestling among three pleasant hills, Bunda College of Agriculture was established in 1966 as a constituent college of the University of Malawi. The picturesque campus is built on 2000 hectares of land situated 35.2 kilometres from Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi.

Intellectual Rigour and a Practical Outlook

Bunda College of Agriculture thrives on instilling in her students the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation, invention, outreach, and a pragmatic love of research and knowledge. The academic programmes emphasize the exploration of ideas and the discovery, application and dissemination of knowledge. Bunda entered the twenty-first century with a comprehensive, powerful and relevant array of graduate and undergraduate programmes.

The college has three faculties (schools) and one research centre. The Faculty of Agriculture offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Animal and Crop Sciences, Home Economics and Human Nutrition, and Agricultural and Irrigation Engineering. The Faculty of Environmental Sciences offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Aquaculture and Fisheries Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Natural Resources Management, and Forestry and Horticulture. The Faculty of Development Studies offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Agriculture Economics and Business Management, Agriculture Extension, and Agricultural Education. The Centre for Agriculture Research and Development (CARD) coordinates the college’s research activities. It also organizes short courses and provides consultancy services to both government and the private sector

Top students and faculty

Today, Bunda is home to a diverse undergraduate student body of nearly 600, hailing from all over Malawi and the SADC region. The college welcomes students and staff regardless of gender, race, class, ethnicity or religious affiliation. The college works with government to ensure that all normal entry students receive scholarships. Bunda accepts national and international qualified fee paying students. There is a thriving postgraduate student body among which are a significant number of international students. The college also boasts of a large concentration of doctoral degree holders and professor grade academic staff.

Authoritative research

Research is a substantial and esteemed enterprise at Bunda. The college brings together researchers from multiple fields of interest into a pulsating intellectual convergence whose purpose is to improve agricultural output and sustainable utilization and management of natural resources while fostering Malawi’s natural environment. Academic staff are engaged in demand-driven cutting edge research in agricultural sciences including plant biotechnology, rain water harvesting, bean-cowpea breeding, domestication of indigenous vegetables, and action-oriented research in extension and community outreach.  Bunda College is now coordinating a national Norwegian funded ARDEF (Agricultural Research and Development Fund) Programme for poverty reduction in Malawi.
