GenStat Discovery Edition Documentation

GenStat Discovery Edition is a free version of GenStat developed by VSN International for use by not-for-profit research organisations, charities and educational institutes based in the developing world. Click here to go to the website of VSN Intl. Click here for general information about GenStat Discovery Edition.

The GenStat software itself is supplied with a full range of documentation in electronic format, accessible from the Help system and in pdf format. This includes introductory and technical documentation. There is a simple tutorial and a more comprehensive tutorial aimed at users from agricultural research. An introductory guide in French is included, but most of the documentation, and the program interface itself are in English.

On this page we give an overview of documentation and additional resources on the GenStat Discovery Edition. The difference between GenStat Discovery Edition 3, and GenStat 7 for Windows lies in the distribution and registration. User guides and manuals written for one version can be used for the other version. Not everything from manuals written for later versions can be used for the GenStat Discovery Edition.

You need Adobe Acrobat reader to read the pdf documents. If you don't have it, click here.

Learning a software means you have to go through a learning curve. Below we rank the resources from easy to advanced.

Resources for novice users or for users who are not very confident about their statistics skills.

Following manuals are written for GenStat Discovery Edition 2 (GenStat for Windows 5). They will be updated and replaced later.

A PowerPoint presentation by Wim Buysse used in a RUFORUM training workshop in Zambia that shows how to move from ANOVA and regression to Generalised Linear Models using GenStat Discovery Edition 2. The presentation focuses on understanding the underlying distributions. The data used in the exercises (MS Excel spreadsheets) can be found in the zip-file.

Biometris procedures

A procedure is a kind of subroutine written in the GenStat command language. New statistical methods are usually first written as a procedure and later fully incorporated in a next version of GenStat.

Below you can download a set of procedures from Biometris. Biometris is the integration of the business unit Biometry of Plant Research International (http://www.pri.wur.nl/uk/) and the departments of Applied Mathematics and Applied Statistics of Wageningen University. Biometris is a group of about 35 statisticians and mathematicians, organised in four clusters.
