Distribution of CDroms with GenStat Discovery Edition 3 and other research methods resources in Africa |
GenStat Discovery Edition is a free version of GenStat developed by VSN International for use by not-for-profit research organisations, charities and educational institutes based in the developing world. Click here to go to the website of VSN Intl. Click here for general information about GenStat Discovery Edition. Within Africa, also a CD-rom is distributed by the ICRAF-ILRI Research Methods Group to national promoters. You can get a free CDrom from those national promoters. There is no budget to send CD-roms to individual users, so you have to arrange to pick up a CD-rom yourself. But usually national promoters are located in a big research institute or university that is easy to reach. The CD-rom contains GenStat Discovery Edition 3, its documentation and a copy of the website you are now reading. This website contains many resources that can be used for studying or teaching various aspects of research methods. You are allowed to copy your CDrom and give it to colleagues and students. Or you can lend them your CDrom to be copied. You are not allowed to sell the CDrom. The website is of course updated faster than the CDrom. Just check every six months or so with your distributor to know if there is a new version of the CDrom. |

What can you expect from a national promoter? |
Following "national promoters" are people who are willing to contribute in spreading free professional statistical software and other research methods resources to lecturers, researchers and students in Africa. They are not paid for being a national promoter and do this on top of their other daily work. This means there is no budget to mail or deliver CDroms to you. Instead, you have to find a way to pick up a CDrom from your nearest national promoter. So, phone or email your nearest national promoter and arrange when and how you can pick up one or more CDroms. The national promoter will give you minimum one CDrom. The maximum number of CDroms you can get (for instance to give to your students) depends on how many are available in stock. But the national promoter will arrange to get additional CDroms if there are not enough. If you urgently need additional CDroms and your national promoter is almost out of stock, you can still make copies of the CDroms yourself. Generally, you are allowed to copy the CDs and give it to colleagues, students or other non-commercial users. Or colleagues and students can borrow your CDrom and make a copy themselves. You are however not allowed to sell the CDs. |

There is no national promoter in your country or the nearest one is far away ? |

Then the only solution is to find somebody who wants to be a national promoter or to become a promoter yourself. An ideal national promoter is somebody who: |
- believes in the cause of spreading research methods resources to fellow researchers, lecturers and students |
- is located in a university or research institute that is easy to reach by public transport |
- is often in the office or has a secretary or colleague who can take over during absence |
- arranges to get additional CDroms before the stock is completed |
